1
00:00:22,640 --> 00:00:25,190
it's disgusting i'm insulted i pace

2
00:00:25,190 --> 00:00:25,670
without

3
00:00:25,670 --> 00:00:27,030
parallel and i'm to be allowed three

4
00:00:27,030 --> 00:00:28,870
pounds five shillings and six months

5
00:00:28,870 --> 00:00:30,070
think think the prestige treasure for

6
00:00:30,070 --> 00:00:32,150
justice it couldn't be expected to

7
00:00:32,150 --> 00:00:36,550
defend a dog on that

8
00:00:36,550 --> 00:00:40,640
all set

9
00:00:40,640 --> 00:00:42,230
come to think of it i did defend a dog

10
00:00:42,230 --> 00:00:44,470
once said bernard it was

11
00:00:44,470 --> 00:00:46,150
i've got a dump site more for doing it

12
00:00:46,150 --> 00:00:48,960
too

13
00:00:48,960 --> 00:00:53,190
good morning is it well if you say so

14
00:00:53,190 --> 00:00:55,670
do i detect to fit a peek marshall you

15
00:00:55,670 --> 00:00:56,390
detect

16
00:00:56,390 --> 00:00:59,190
podkin a man about to open an oyster

17
00:00:59,190 --> 00:01:09,280
with a pin

18
00:01:09,280 --> 00:01:16,470
oh god

19
00:01:16,470 --> 00:01:29,590
all rise

20
00:01:29,590 --> 00:01:32,070
problems marshall's being paid out of

21
00:01:32,070 --> 00:01:34,560
the poor prisoners defense fund

22
00:01:34,560 --> 00:01:37,350
not our problem he could step down

23
00:01:37,350 --> 00:01:38,950
rather unfair on the prisoner at this

24
00:01:38,950 --> 00:01:40,230
late stage

25
00:01:40,230 --> 00:01:49,430
even this prison

26
00:01:49,430 --> 00:01:53,680
why does smith fascinate them so much

27
00:01:53,680 --> 00:01:55,590
two kinds of people should never try to

28
00:01:55,590 --> 00:01:57,280
fathom

29
00:01:57,280 --> 00:02:04,560
judges and

30
00:02:07,280 --> 00:02:15,120
you're women

31
00:02:34,870 --> 00:02:51,110
i see come on

32
00:03:16,150 --> 00:03:18,840
it's all right

33
00:03:23,030 --> 00:03:32,720
somebody help me

34
00:03:44,840 --> 00:03:48,710
yes

35
00:03:48,710 --> 00:03:51,360
you lucky girl this is a dangerous part

36
00:03:51,360 --> 00:03:52,870
of the river

37
00:03:52,870 --> 00:03:55,910
my name's henry williams

38
00:03:55,910 --> 00:03:59,190
my name's beatrice thank you you've been

39
00:03:59,190 --> 00:04:01,120
so kind

40
00:04:01,120 --> 00:04:05,190
beatrice it's a lovely name

41
00:04:05,190 --> 00:04:07,430
my friends call me bessie then i'll call

42
00:04:07,430 --> 00:04:11,750
you bessie

43
00:04:11,750 --> 00:04:13,910
i haven't seen you out here before no

44
00:04:13,910 --> 00:04:14,790
i'm on business

45
00:04:14,790 --> 00:04:16,950
what do you do i'm a picture of store

46
00:04:16,950 --> 00:04:20,160
what kind of pictures do you restore

47
00:04:20,160 --> 00:04:24,390
pretty ones

48
00:04:24,390 --> 00:04:27,510
i better get back to my friends

49
00:04:27,510 --> 00:04:31,600
am i going to see you again

50
00:04:31,600 --> 00:04:33,430
i don't know well how about here

51
00:04:33,430 --> 00:04:36,630
tomorrow same time

52
00:04:36,630 --> 00:04:40,310
bessie you really should learn to swim

53
00:04:40,310 --> 00:04:44,000
you know

54
00:04:55,830 --> 00:04:58,800
you're very beautiful did anyone ever

55
00:04:58,800 --> 00:05:02,240
tell you you've got stunning ankles

56
00:05:02,240 --> 00:05:03,910
have another sandwich no they're like

57
00:05:03,910 --> 00:05:05,270
fine works of art

58
00:05:05,270 --> 00:05:07,750
well you know i'm surprised you're not

59
00:05:07,750 --> 00:05:09,430
married

60
00:05:09,430 --> 00:05:11,360
my family don't think i'm responsible

61
00:05:11,360 --> 00:05:13,600
enough and are you responsible enough

62
00:05:13,600 --> 00:05:15,910
i'm 31. i can do whatever i like

63
00:05:15,910 --> 00:05:20,000
i like defiance in a woman

64
00:05:20,000 --> 00:05:24,310
what's this victim of the shake

65
00:05:24,310 --> 00:05:26,560
i only read them because i'm bored i

66
00:05:26,560 --> 00:05:30,390
prefer tennis on myself

67
00:05:30,390 --> 00:05:34,720
so why don't you run away with

68
00:05:34,720 --> 00:05:38,950
money my father had everything put into

69
00:05:38,950 --> 00:05:40,870
trust for me

70
00:05:40,870 --> 00:05:43,270
i have an income but it's barely

71
00:05:43,270 --> 00:05:44,950
sufficient to live on

72
00:05:44,950 --> 00:05:47,190
they think i'd escape to south america

73
00:05:47,190 --> 00:05:48,560
or somewhere taking all my

74
00:05:48,560 --> 00:05:51,270
guilted securities with me do you know

75
00:05:51,270 --> 00:05:52,240
what they are

76
00:05:52,240 --> 00:05:55,360
what what guilt edge securities

77
00:05:55,360 --> 00:05:57,270
the united kingdom government fixed

78
00:05:57,270 --> 00:05:59,190
interest stock the price of which

79
00:05:59,190 --> 00:06:02,240
depends on prevailing interest rates

80
00:06:02,240 --> 00:06:05,910
i believe you sound just like my brother

81
00:06:05,910 --> 00:06:06,560
howard

82
00:06:06,560 --> 00:06:08,000
well it's a man's job to know about

83
00:06:08,000 --> 00:06:12,160
these things

84
00:06:12,160 --> 00:06:15,600
i'd invite you back for tea

85
00:06:15,600 --> 00:06:18,470
of course but i don't think my landlady

86
00:06:18,470 --> 00:06:20,000
would approve

87
00:06:20,000 --> 00:06:25,680
she acts as a spy for my brother

88
00:06:25,680 --> 00:06:40,160
then why invite me back

89
00:06:40,160 --> 00:06:44,630
marry me i hardly know you

90
00:06:44,630 --> 00:06:49,270
hmm i think we know each other very well

91
00:06:49,270 --> 00:07:02,070
bessie mundy

92
00:07:02,070 --> 00:07:05,270
well mrs williams

93
00:07:05,270 --> 00:07:07,870
may i take you home you may

94
00:07:12,950 --> 00:07:16,470
23rd of july 1910

95
00:07:16,470 --> 00:07:19,510
dear howard i got married today

96
00:07:19,510 --> 00:07:21,270
and we have taken lodgings here in

97
00:07:21,270 --> 00:07:24,950
weymouth

98
00:07:24,950 --> 00:07:27,830
i am so happy and excited about my new

99
00:07:27,830 --> 00:07:29,030
life with henry

100
00:07:29,030 --> 00:07:32,800
who was quite quite wonderful love

101
00:07:32,800 --> 00:07:35,700
bessie williams

102
00:07:41,270 --> 00:07:43,750
eight pounds a month mr wilkinson is not

103
00:07:43,750 --> 00:07:45,830
enough for my husband tonight to live on

104
00:07:45,830 --> 00:07:48,630
we need a house of our own mrs williams

105
00:07:48,630 --> 00:07:50,630
under your father's settlement

106
00:07:50,630 --> 00:07:55,680
there is an amount of 138 pounds

107
00:07:55,680 --> 00:07:58,800
put aside for emergencies but the main

108
00:07:58,800 --> 00:07:59,190
sum

109
00:07:59,190 --> 00:08:01,430
of two and a half thousand pounds is in

110
00:08:01,430 --> 00:08:02,720
trust

111
00:08:02,720 --> 00:08:04,630
and mrs williams is not permitted to

112
00:08:04,630 --> 00:08:07,590
touch that even though we're now married

113
00:08:07,590 --> 00:08:09,680
the only way would be for your family to

114
00:08:09,680 --> 00:08:12,240
revoke the settlement

115
00:08:12,240 --> 00:08:14,750
i'm sorry but the monthly income and the

116
00:08:14,750 --> 00:08:17,360
138 pounds for emergencies is

117
00:08:17,360 --> 00:08:21,270
all miss monday i'm sorry mrs williams

118
00:08:21,270 --> 00:08:25,120
can have access to her mr wilkinson

119
00:08:25,120 --> 00:08:27,360
my husband and i are living in one room

120
00:08:27,360 --> 00:08:28,950
in a boarding house doesn't

121
00:08:28,950 --> 00:08:33,470
that constitute an emergency

122
00:08:33,470 --> 00:08:36,950
138 pounds

123
00:08:36,950 --> 00:08:43,750
let me see wrestling

124
00:08:43,750 --> 00:08:45,830
oh what are we gonna do with the money

125
00:08:45,830 --> 00:08:47,670
don't be so impatient can't we go away

126
00:08:47,670 --> 00:08:48,790
somewhere

127
00:08:48,790 --> 00:08:51,030
like paris i've never been to paris you

128
00:08:51,030 --> 00:08:52,390
heard what you said you said the money

129
00:08:52,390 --> 00:08:54,080
was for an emergency well henry can't we

130
00:08:54,080 --> 00:08:55,670
have an emergency now please

131
00:08:55,670 --> 00:08:57,030
then at least we can spend it on

132
00:08:57,030 --> 00:08:58,790
something yeah you listen to me

133
00:08:58,790 --> 00:09:00,720
i'm gonna put the money in the bank why

134
00:09:00,720 --> 00:09:04,480
don't you wait for me

135
00:09:04,480 --> 00:09:08,530
don't be long

136
00:09:34,830 --> 00:09:36,120
so

137
00:10:08,950 --> 00:10:10,720
he must have made a mistake let me see

138
00:10:10,720 --> 00:10:12,480
the letter he says

139
00:10:12,480 --> 00:10:14,630
i wasn't clean when i married him but i

140
00:10:14,630 --> 00:10:16,870
was i was

141
00:10:16,870 --> 00:10:19,510
a bad infection he says he'll come back

142
00:10:19,510 --> 00:10:21,360
when he's cured

143
00:10:21,360 --> 00:10:22,550
listen to me will you listen to your

144
00:10:22,550 --> 00:10:24,480
brother look he's gone and he's not

145
00:10:24,480 --> 00:10:25,440
coming back

146
00:10:25,440 --> 00:10:27,120
he was a rogue and if he could have got

147
00:10:27,120 --> 00:10:28,320
his hands on your settlement he would

148
00:10:28,320 --> 00:10:28,870
have done

149
00:10:28,870 --> 00:10:31,030
i'll catch him you can bank on that he

150
00:10:31,030 --> 00:10:32,870
will come back i know he will he just

151
00:10:32,870 --> 00:10:33,750
made a mistake

152
00:10:33,750 --> 00:10:35,510
that's all you married in secret to a

153
00:10:35,510 --> 00:10:37,270
man who scarcely knew

154
00:10:37,270 --> 00:10:39,600
he gets 138 pounds of your father's

155
00:10:39,600 --> 00:10:40,480
money

156
00:10:40,480 --> 00:10:43,360
he steals your clothes he loves me he

157
00:10:43,360 --> 00:10:45,440
will come back i know he

158
00:10:45,440 --> 00:10:48,390
your family loves you we wouldn't hurt

159
00:10:48,390 --> 00:10:49,440
you for the world just

160
00:10:49,440 --> 00:11:01,940
trust us i want henry

161
00:11:09,910 --> 00:11:15,210
there's a stain

162
00:11:26,830 --> 00:11:29,120
is

163
00:11:32,150 --> 00:11:38,550
finally and only two letters from you

164
00:11:38,550 --> 00:11:43,440
there's business has business

165
00:11:43,440 --> 00:11:48,790
how's our marriage more to the point

166
00:11:48,790 --> 00:11:53,120
if look i bought a few pieces

167
00:11:53,120 --> 00:12:02,150
i'm a young man

168
00:12:02,150 --> 00:12:04,720
yeah well you know most have sold

169
00:12:04,720 --> 00:12:05,910
privately

170
00:12:05,910 --> 00:12:07,600
at this rate there's barely any purpose

171
00:12:07,600 --> 00:12:09,510
in keeping the shop open

172
00:12:09,510 --> 00:12:13,200
so i have to take in this oh look

173
00:12:13,200 --> 00:12:20,070
i thought we could sell these

174
00:12:20,070 --> 00:12:23,670
they're quite fashionable so i'm told

175
00:12:23,670 --> 00:12:36,830
i missed you george i missed you too

176
00:12:36,830 --> 00:12:41,030
george hmm

177
00:12:41,030 --> 00:12:44,150
will you let me read you a novel you

178
00:12:44,150 --> 00:12:48,480
wouldn't understand it edith

179
00:12:48,480 --> 00:12:56,950
you used to write me poetry

180
00:12:56,950 --> 00:13:00,070
will you be going away again

181
00:13:00,070 --> 00:13:01,600
well next time i may have to go to

182
00:13:01,600 --> 00:13:06,150
canada canada

183
00:13:06,150 --> 00:13:08,790
must you go so far i have to go where my

184
00:13:08,790 --> 00:13:13,030
business takes me you know that

185
00:13:13,030 --> 00:13:14,550
just hate the thought of you traveling

186
00:13:14,550 --> 00:13:17,510
over the sea

187
00:13:17,510 --> 00:13:21,670
if anything should happen

188
00:13:21,670 --> 00:13:23,440
besides if i didn't go away i will be

189
00:13:23,440 --> 00:14:00,240
able to come back home to you would i

190
00:14:00,240 --> 00:14:06,390
what have you done with

191
00:14:06,390 --> 00:14:07,750
old man you're throwing it down the

192
00:14:07,750 --> 00:14:09,600
stairs hasn't he boys and girls

193
00:14:09,600 --> 00:14:12,390
yes i know what i'll do i'll go

194
00:14:12,390 --> 00:14:13,600
downstairs and get

195
00:14:13,600 --> 00:14:16,720
the big stick to you oh

196
00:14:16,720 --> 00:14:32,270
you take that you wish you know man

197
00:14:39,030 --> 00:14:41,030
is there something funny going on around

198
00:14:41,030 --> 00:14:42,720
here

199
00:14:42,720 --> 00:14:44,240
i don't know where to begin how to

200
00:14:44,240 --> 00:14:45,910
apologize don't

201
00:14:45,910 --> 00:14:48,480
i wasn't the only bestie i was mistaken

202
00:14:48,480 --> 00:14:50,550
i was horribly mistaken

203
00:14:50,550 --> 00:14:53,120
to accuse you of such a thing is just it

204
00:14:53,120 --> 00:14:54,070
was unforgivable

205
00:14:54,070 --> 00:14:56,830
it was i needed the money to powerful

206
00:14:56,830 --> 00:14:58,390
death

207
00:14:58,390 --> 00:15:00,630
i was afraid ever to face you again you

208
00:15:00,630 --> 00:15:02,720
needn't have been afraid

209
00:15:02,720 --> 00:15:07,030
i'd have lent it to you and

210
00:15:07,030 --> 00:15:12,240
the clothes really don't matter at all

211
00:15:12,240 --> 00:15:15,670
you are the only woman i have ever loved

212
00:15:15,670 --> 00:15:18,480
and i treated you so badly how can you

213
00:15:18,480 --> 00:15:20,480
ever forgive me

214
00:15:20,480 --> 00:15:22,480
all that matters henry is that i have

215
00:15:22,480 --> 00:15:25,120
you

216
00:15:25,120 --> 00:15:28,630
that's all i back wanted

217
00:15:28,630 --> 00:15:31,360
and what about your family i'd like them

218
00:15:31,360 --> 00:15:34,480
to forgive me too

219
00:15:34,480 --> 00:15:38,550
we'll write to them tell them

220
00:15:38,550 --> 00:15:41,670
we're reconciled tell them everything

221
00:15:41,670 --> 00:15:43,270
that happened in the past was just a big

222
00:15:43,270 --> 00:15:45,360
mistake it was henry

223
00:15:45,360 --> 00:15:54,410
wasn't it the biggest mistake of my life

224
00:16:06,830 --> 00:16:08,630
uh

225
00:16:08,630 --> 00:16:12,630
mr monday your sister never lost her

226
00:16:12,630 --> 00:16:14,790
affection for the prisoner

227
00:16:14,790 --> 00:16:16,480
she was not competent at managing her

228
00:16:16,480 --> 00:16:17,830
own affairs

229
00:16:17,830 --> 00:16:19,440
with respect that's not the question i

230
00:16:19,440 --> 00:16:20,950
asked you

231
00:16:20,950 --> 00:16:23,440
when your sister met the defendant again

232
00:16:23,440 --> 00:16:25,600
a year and a half later she was just as

233
00:16:25,600 --> 00:16:27,120
much in love with him as she was on the

234
00:16:27,120 --> 00:16:29,600
day he left

235
00:16:29,600 --> 00:16:33,440
i i suppose sir and did he not write to

236
00:16:33,440 --> 00:16:35,440
you i refer him a lot

237
00:16:35,440 --> 00:16:40,480
to exhibit mark number 89

238
00:16:40,480 --> 00:16:44,240
offering you his humblest apology

239
00:16:44,240 --> 00:16:47,360
and did he not use the words forgiveness

240
00:16:47,360 --> 00:16:52,550
and reconciliation yes

241
00:16:52,550 --> 00:16:55,030
what's a nice letter is it not well that

242
00:16:55,030 --> 00:16:56,950
one is

243
00:16:56,950 --> 00:16:59,600
powerful words forgiveness and

244
00:16:59,600 --> 00:17:06,000
reconciliation are they not

245
00:17:06,000 --> 00:17:09,090
thank you

246
00:17:15,030 --> 00:17:17,510
you're not from hernday no my wife and i

247
00:17:17,510 --> 00:17:21,510
were recently married

248
00:17:21,510 --> 00:17:24,550
i will need some references

249
00:17:24,550 --> 00:17:27,670
i don't have any i'm afraid everybody

250
00:17:27,670 --> 00:17:29,270
must have references well i've been

251
00:17:29,270 --> 00:17:31,030
living abroad how much is a yearly

252
00:17:31,030 --> 00:17:32,240
tenancy

253
00:17:32,240 --> 00:17:35,510
18 pounds which does not

254
00:17:35,510 --> 00:17:37,670
include furnishings of course so you

255
00:17:37,670 --> 00:17:40,310
would have to supply those for yourself

256
00:17:40,310 --> 00:17:43,200
it's very expensive you know well you

257
00:17:43,200 --> 00:17:44,720
must take that up with the land agent

258
00:17:44,720 --> 00:17:46,240
not me

259
00:17:46,240 --> 00:17:50,400
i'm only mr wilbur's secretary of course

260
00:17:50,400 --> 00:17:53,030
so bathroom miss rappler there's no

261
00:17:53,030 --> 00:17:55,270
bathroom in the house

262
00:17:55,270 --> 00:17:58,160
nor is there any water laid on upstairs

263
00:17:58,160 --> 00:18:00,000
why don't you go upstairs

264
00:18:00,000 --> 00:18:09,510
and if you like it we'll take it

265
00:18:09,510 --> 00:18:13,030
the kitchen

266
00:18:13,030 --> 00:18:15,670
i will need details of your banking

267
00:18:15,670 --> 00:18:22,400
account

268
00:18:22,400 --> 00:18:25,030
this is a post office savings book what

269
00:18:25,030 --> 00:18:27,110
i mean is a proper bank account

270
00:18:27,110 --> 00:18:29,440
so that i can write to the manager for

271
00:18:29,440 --> 00:18:30,310
references

272
00:18:30,310 --> 00:18:33,830
you'll find i have sufficient capital

273
00:18:33,830 --> 00:18:36,790
i've never heard of such a thing taking

274
00:18:36,790 --> 00:18:38,400
a property with no references

275
00:18:38,400 --> 00:18:42,160
no bank account it's tell me

276
00:18:42,160 --> 00:18:46,000
have you lived in on by law all my life

277
00:18:46,000 --> 00:18:54,830
then you can tell me where i can buy a

278
00:18:54,830 --> 00:19:03,780
bath

279
00:19:08,830 --> 00:19:10,770
left

280
00:19:22,240 --> 00:19:24,880
any insanity mental trouble among your

281
00:19:24,880 --> 00:19:26,640
relatives

282
00:19:26,640 --> 00:19:27,830
didn't you said it was starting

283
00:19:27,830 --> 00:19:30,960
somewhere in the past i don't remember

284
00:19:30,960 --> 00:19:33,670
have you had a fit before mrs williams i

285
00:19:33,670 --> 00:19:35,270
don't believe so

286
00:19:35,270 --> 00:19:37,200
do any of your families suffer from

287
00:19:37,200 --> 00:19:39,270
epilepsy by any chance

288
00:19:39,270 --> 00:19:44,160
no thank you

289
00:19:44,160 --> 00:19:45,750
how long did your wife lose

290
00:19:45,750 --> 00:19:47,590
consciousness for well it was

291
00:19:47,590 --> 00:19:49,750
only for a few seconds she doesn't

292
00:19:49,750 --> 00:19:50,960
remember of course

293
00:19:50,960 --> 00:19:53,590
you have no memory my husband says i

294
00:19:53,590 --> 00:19:54,790
lost consciousness

295
00:19:54,790 --> 00:19:57,830
i lost consciousness one moment we were

296
00:19:57,830 --> 00:19:59,590
in bed

297
00:19:59,590 --> 00:20:02,960
she was awake and then

298
00:20:02,960 --> 00:20:06,790
now it was very alarming

299
00:20:06,790 --> 00:20:18,830
i'll give her this it's bromide of

300
00:20:18,830 --> 00:20:24,880
potassium

301
00:20:24,880 --> 00:20:26,960
there are six doses one to be taken

302
00:20:26,960 --> 00:20:28,640
three times a day

303
00:20:28,640 --> 00:20:32,400
it's a sedative it should calm her

304
00:20:32,400 --> 00:20:33,590
let me know the moment there are any

305
00:20:33,590 --> 00:20:36,720
reoccurrences

306
00:20:36,720 --> 00:21:14,830
thank you doctor i will

307
00:21:14,830 --> 00:21:26,180
so

308
00:21:40,790 --> 00:21:44,400
are you fast ready

309
00:21:44,400 --> 00:21:47,440
now have you taken your sedative

310
00:21:47,440 --> 00:21:50,720
yes i thought i'd go and get some fish

311
00:21:50,720 --> 00:21:52,240
for supper that would be nice

312
00:21:52,240 --> 00:21:57,350
what kind of fancy you choose

313
00:21:57,350 --> 00:22:38,830
good girl

314
00:22:38,830 --> 00:22:52,830
uh

315
00:22:52,830 --> 00:23:01,450
henry

316
00:23:20,830 --> 00:23:24,460
um

317
00:23:48,830 --> 00:23:51,750
what

318
00:24:02,830 --> 00:24:05,260
um

319
00:24:14,400 --> 00:24:28,550
help me

320
00:24:28,550 --> 00:24:34,400
take our teeth out percy come on please

321
00:24:34,400 --> 00:24:38,780
please

322
00:24:40,150 --> 00:24:43,910
come on what's this

323
00:24:43,910 --> 00:24:46,210
i told you she had a feet

324
00:24:50,550 --> 00:25:12,830
i am sorry mr williams

325
00:25:12,830 --> 00:25:17,540
cruiser

326
00:25:33,510 --> 00:25:36,310
it was your opinion was it not dr french

327
00:25:36,310 --> 00:25:37,910
that the defendant's wife suffered from

328
00:25:37,910 --> 00:25:39,830
an epileptic seizure

329
00:25:39,830 --> 00:25:42,400
it was at the time at the time you've

330
00:25:42,400 --> 00:25:43,910
changed your opinion

331
00:25:43,910 --> 00:25:45,750
but that was your honest opinion freely

332
00:25:45,750 --> 00:25:47,590
expressed before the coroner

333
00:25:47,590 --> 00:25:50,960
yes yes now these events took place in

334
00:25:50,960 --> 00:25:53,750
1912 we are today 1915.

335
00:25:53,750 --> 00:25:55,440
would you say your recollection was

336
00:25:55,440 --> 00:25:58,150
better in 1912 than it is today

337
00:25:58,150 --> 00:26:01,270
i suppose so yes and there were no marks

338
00:26:01,270 --> 00:26:03,440
or bruises on the body

339
00:26:03,440 --> 00:26:06,550
no no signs of violence of any kind

340
00:26:06,550 --> 00:26:11,910
none no now in your opinion dr french

341
00:26:11,910 --> 00:26:14,640
would it be possible to drown anybody in

342
00:26:14,640 --> 00:26:16,790
this bath unless they were already

343
00:26:16,790 --> 00:26:20,480
unconscious without signs of violence on

344
00:26:20,480 --> 00:26:21,030
the body

345
00:26:21,030 --> 00:26:22,790
melody is my understanding that one of

346
00:26:22,790 --> 00:26:24,480
the jury has expressed a wish that

347
00:26:24,480 --> 00:26:26,640
someone be put in the bath for an ocular

348
00:26:26,640 --> 00:26:30,070
demonstration

349
00:26:30,070 --> 00:26:34,640
this is a court mr bodkin not a circus

350
00:26:34,640 --> 00:26:36,480
please remember that this is not france

351
00:26:36,480 --> 00:26:39,110
where they reconstruct crimes

352
00:26:39,110 --> 00:26:40,790
the jury can try it out for themselves

353
00:26:40,790 --> 00:26:43,200
in their private room

354
00:26:43,200 --> 00:26:45,350
perhaps my learned friend mr bodkin

355
00:26:45,350 --> 00:26:46,480
could provide us with someone the

356
00:26:46,480 --> 00:26:51,350
correct height

357
00:26:51,350 --> 00:26:55,030
dr french when you found the defendant's

358
00:26:55,030 --> 00:26:56,310
wife

359
00:26:56,310 --> 00:26:58,070
she was holding a piece of soap like

360
00:26:58,070 --> 00:27:00,480
this

361
00:27:00,480 --> 00:27:02,960
would you clutch a piece of soap if you

362
00:27:02,960 --> 00:27:07,270
were drowning in the mouth

363
00:27:07,270 --> 00:27:10,420
i await your answer

364
00:27:14,880 --> 00:27:17,030
i'm sure mr hill will understand because

365
00:27:17,030 --> 00:27:18,480
the bath was only used once i have no

366
00:27:18,480 --> 00:27:21,350
intention of paying for it

367
00:27:21,350 --> 00:27:23,910
dr french said i should get away quite

368
00:27:23,910 --> 00:27:25,200
my nerves

369
00:27:25,200 --> 00:27:28,240
excellent idea mr williams do you have

370
00:27:28,240 --> 00:27:30,720
any places for sounds frankly

371
00:27:30,720 --> 00:27:34,320
somewhere in the country

372
00:27:44,640 --> 00:27:48,150
and now as we commit the body of

373
00:27:48,150 --> 00:27:49,510
beatrice williams

374
00:27:49,510 --> 00:27:53,030
to the ground ashes

375
00:27:53,030 --> 00:27:58,880
to ashes dust to dust

376
00:27:58,880 --> 00:28:06,960
death we are as in life

377
00:28:06,960 --> 00:28:09,200
mr williams one moment please i have a

378
00:28:09,200 --> 00:28:10,720
business appointment i'm sorry

379
00:28:10,720 --> 00:28:14,310
my sister's death is my business

380
00:28:14,310 --> 00:28:16,000
god took her from me too don't forget

381
00:28:16,000 --> 00:28:17,750
that why weren't my family informed in

382
00:28:17,750 --> 00:28:19,030
time to attend the inquest

383
00:28:19,030 --> 00:28:21,350
you know the verdict was death by

384
00:28:21,350 --> 00:28:22,550
misadventure

385
00:28:22,550 --> 00:28:24,310
bess's biggest misadventure was marrying

386
00:28:24,310 --> 00:28:26,640
a bastard like you i know what you did

387
00:28:26,640 --> 00:28:28,150
you made mutual wills to get in her

388
00:28:28,150 --> 00:28:31,030
money we were married mr monday

389
00:28:31,030 --> 00:28:32,480
now what belongs to her belongs to me

390
00:28:32,480 --> 00:28:34,390
yeah well i'll challenge it i'm damned

391
00:28:34,390 --> 00:28:35,830
if you'll get your filthy hands on my

392
00:28:35,830 --> 00:28:39,030
sister's settlement

393
00:28:39,030 --> 00:28:47,030
if you'll excuse me

394
00:28:47,030 --> 00:28:50,390
they made mutual wills that makes him

395
00:28:50,390 --> 00:28:52,550
legally entitled to everything in the

396
00:28:52,550 --> 00:28:54,960
settlement she died only five days after

397
00:28:54,960 --> 00:28:56,240
she made her will out

398
00:28:56,240 --> 00:28:58,790
it's immaterial the verdict of the

399
00:28:58,790 --> 00:29:02,000
inquest jury was that it was an accident

400
00:29:02,000 --> 00:29:10,070
an accident my

401
00:29:10,070 --> 00:29:11,510
you're telling me that there's nothing i

402
00:29:11,510 --> 00:29:13,270
can do to stop that man getting better's

403
00:29:13,270 --> 00:29:14,550
two and a half thousand pounds

404
00:29:14,550 --> 00:29:24,960
i'm sorry well so am i

405
00:29:24,960 --> 00:29:30,390
put it down there for me

406
00:29:30,390 --> 00:30:01,670
thank you

407
00:30:01,670 --> 00:30:05,030
how was the voyage

408
00:30:05,030 --> 00:30:08,150
it was um longer

409
00:30:08,150 --> 00:30:23,810
first tiring

410
00:30:27,440 --> 00:30:29,590
my lord i strongly protest this new line

411
00:30:29,590 --> 00:30:31,750
of inquiry from my learned friend

412
00:30:31,750 --> 00:30:33,350
i was under the impression that in

413
00:30:33,350 --> 00:30:35,110
english law a defendant could only be

414
00:30:35,110 --> 00:30:36,240
charged with one

415
00:30:36,240 --> 00:30:38,960
murder at a time i am of course aware of

416
00:30:38,960 --> 00:30:40,550
that blood but surely

417
00:30:40,550 --> 00:30:43,510
any evidence proving a system to obtain

418
00:30:43,510 --> 00:30:44,880
money by murder

419
00:30:44,880 --> 00:30:47,110
is admissible why don't you also add

420
00:30:47,110 --> 00:30:49,030
prejudicial

421
00:30:49,030 --> 00:30:50,720
in this instance i agree with you mr

422
00:30:50,720 --> 00:30:54,150
bodkin the evidence of a system

423
00:30:54,150 --> 00:30:57,750
could be very valid in this case my lord

424
00:30:57,750 --> 00:30:59,830
there is no precedent for such a saying

425
00:30:59,830 --> 00:31:02,390
in a murder trial

426
00:31:02,390 --> 00:31:04,390
as gentleman of the lord it is sometimes

427
00:31:04,390 --> 00:31:06,000
reassuring

428
00:31:06,000 --> 00:31:24,150
to be able to set a precedent

429
00:31:24,150 --> 00:31:26,640
all right smith fine thank you mr all

430
00:31:26,640 --> 00:31:28,310
good

431
00:31:28,310 --> 00:31:30,960
well it's all going rather well so far

432
00:31:30,960 --> 00:31:31,670
really

433
00:31:31,670 --> 00:31:34,000
yeah at present you're only being tried

434
00:31:34,000 --> 00:31:35,670
for the murder of bessie mundy

435
00:31:35,670 --> 00:31:37,670
and i do not consider betsy monday's

436
00:31:37,670 --> 00:31:39,750
murder proven

437
00:31:39,750 --> 00:31:42,070
what happens to god if i'm not guilty

438
00:31:44,550 --> 00:31:49,110
it's not as simple as that

439
00:31:49,110 --> 00:31:50,480
you believe i'm innocent don't you miss

440
00:31:50,480 --> 00:31:53,030
though what the barrister believes is

441
00:31:53,030 --> 00:31:54,390
unimportant

442
00:31:54,390 --> 00:31:56,640
unfortunately the prosecution are going

443
00:31:56,640 --> 00:31:58,240
to try to bring in evidence from the

444
00:31:58,240 --> 00:32:04,310
other deaths

445
00:32:04,310 --> 00:32:05,910
i thought you said i could only try for

446
00:32:05,910 --> 00:32:09,200
one murder at a time absolutely

447
00:32:09,200 --> 00:32:12,830
but they want to show that you had a

448
00:32:12,830 --> 00:32:17,110
system

449
00:32:17,110 --> 00:32:20,240
system yeah system with

450
00:32:20,240 --> 00:32:23,200
the other wives there's no precedent for

451
00:32:23,200 --> 00:32:24,880
it and i i will continue to argue

452
00:32:24,880 --> 00:32:25,910
against it of course

453
00:32:25,910 --> 00:32:30,240
but i just thought i'd warn you now

454
00:32:30,240 --> 00:32:42,850
the next bride where did you meet her

455
00:32:54,830 --> 00:32:56,310
hmm

456
00:32:56,310 --> 00:32:59,270
oh happy bridesmaid make a happy bride

457
00:32:59,270 --> 00:33:01,750
and oh what a pleasant truth i learned

458
00:33:01,750 --> 00:33:03,670
for while the tender surface made thee

459
00:33:03,670 --> 00:33:06,790
weep i loved it

460
00:33:06,790 --> 00:33:10,720
i impressed thy hand and knew the press

461
00:33:10,720 --> 00:33:11,590
returned

462
00:33:11,590 --> 00:33:13,910
you know tennyson maybe that's a poem

463
00:33:13,910 --> 00:33:15,030
that should wait until after we're

464
00:33:15,030 --> 00:33:17,200
married

465
00:33:17,200 --> 00:33:20,790
we're there

466
00:33:20,790 --> 00:33:26,070
let's hope they like me

467
00:33:26,070 --> 00:33:29,200
three bags here just don't get farther

468
00:33:29,200 --> 00:33:30,720
talking about fruit and crops are going

469
00:33:30,720 --> 00:33:31,200
all night

470
00:33:31,200 --> 00:33:34,150
and what about his most precious there

471
00:33:34,150 --> 00:33:41,910
he is

472
00:33:41,910 --> 00:33:44,640
good journey yes father meet my fiance

473
00:33:44,640 --> 00:33:45,440
george

474
00:33:45,440 --> 00:33:47,590
mr burnham sir alice has told me a lot

475
00:33:47,590 --> 00:33:49,510
about you she's told me a lot about you

476
00:33:49,510 --> 00:33:50,150
too

477
00:33:50,150 --> 00:33:52,790
only my good points i hope sir i look

478
00:33:52,790 --> 00:34:09,320
forward to getting better acquainted

479
00:34:12,000 --> 00:34:20,570
how was your journey

480
00:34:30,550 --> 00:34:32,830
i see mrs pankhurst has been arrested

481
00:34:32,830 --> 00:34:34,870
again did i tell you i went to a

482
00:34:34,870 --> 00:34:36,390
demonstration in london

483
00:34:36,390 --> 00:34:38,630
no you didn't you're not going to throw

484
00:34:38,630 --> 00:34:40,000
yourself under a horse or anything

485
00:34:40,000 --> 00:34:41,910
stupid like that were you alice

486
00:34:41,910 --> 00:34:44,150
oh i might why shouldn't a woman have

487
00:34:44,150 --> 00:34:46,150
the right to die for her beliefs

488
00:34:46,150 --> 00:34:47,190
i don't know who put all this

489
00:34:47,190 --> 00:34:49,760
suffragette nonsense into your head

490
00:34:49,760 --> 00:34:51,350
i think so it's only a matter of time

491
00:34:51,350 --> 00:34:53,760
before women get involved

492
00:34:53,760 --> 00:34:56,390
and are treated as responsible adults

493
00:34:56,390 --> 00:34:57,350
women are silly

494
00:34:57,350 --> 00:35:01,350
giddy creatures well most of them

495
00:35:01,350 --> 00:35:04,000
you insult your daughter sir well this

496
00:35:04,000 --> 00:35:05,670
is my daughter i'll insult her all i

497
00:35:05,670 --> 00:35:11,030
like

498
00:35:11,030 --> 00:35:14,070
did you meet alice at the methodist

499
00:35:14,070 --> 00:35:18,480
champ all in chelsea

500
00:35:18,480 --> 00:35:20,800
you're a methodist well i never to

501
00:35:20,800 --> 00:35:23,440
attend wherever i am to be

502
00:35:23,440 --> 00:35:26,630
do you live in south sea no i was just

503
00:35:26,630 --> 00:35:28,830
staying there

504
00:35:28,830 --> 00:35:32,630
business what business are you in

505
00:35:32,630 --> 00:35:34,230
the business of being a gentleman mr

506
00:35:34,230 --> 00:35:37,030
burnham quite a business that

507
00:35:37,030 --> 00:35:40,230
being a gentleman well i have

508
00:35:40,230 --> 00:35:43,280
independent means

509
00:35:43,280 --> 00:35:46,150
i understand your fruit grosser yeah i

510
00:35:46,150 --> 00:35:47,760
got 70 acres

511
00:35:47,760 --> 00:35:48,960
i'm sure father will show you around his

512
00:35:48,960 --> 00:35:52,400
orchard later

513
00:35:52,400 --> 00:35:55,590
these are independent means

514
00:35:55,590 --> 00:35:58,400
how did you come by them i was left

515
00:35:58,400 --> 00:36:00,800
money by richard

516
00:36:00,800 --> 00:36:02,230
i have my bank books and my private

517
00:36:02,230 --> 00:36:04,320
papers for you to inspect later sir

518
00:36:04,320 --> 00:36:06,630
i've no need to do that i think i'm a

519
00:36:06,630 --> 00:36:08,550
better judge of people

520
00:36:08,550 --> 00:36:11,030
it's character that makes a man not

521
00:36:11,030 --> 00:36:20,000
who's got in the bank

522
00:36:20,000 --> 00:36:21,510
what's the matter i'm sorry i just don't

523
00:36:21,510 --> 00:36:23,280
like people probing into my business

524
00:36:23,280 --> 00:36:24,800
he has every right to ask if you're to

525
00:36:24,800 --> 00:36:26,550
marry me alice

526
00:36:26,550 --> 00:36:29,280
let's get married next week away from me

527
00:36:29,280 --> 00:36:30,710
george we can't

528
00:36:30,710 --> 00:36:33,190
we must get married here in the village

529
00:36:33,190 --> 00:36:34,400
george if there's something you're not

530
00:36:34,400 --> 00:36:35,830
telling me about your past i'd rather

531
00:36:35,830 --> 00:36:41,190
you tell me now

532
00:36:41,190 --> 00:36:42,800
i was sent to a reformatory when i was

533
00:36:42,800 --> 00:36:44,550
nine years old

534
00:36:44,550 --> 00:36:47,830
my father

535
00:36:47,830 --> 00:36:51,590
died when i was inside what did you do

536
00:36:51,590 --> 00:36:54,960
it's not important

537
00:36:54,960 --> 00:36:57,280
it was just a small theft let's just

538
00:36:57,280 --> 00:37:00,320
leave it on that

539
00:37:00,320 --> 00:37:03,760
george you were nine years old

540
00:37:03,760 --> 00:37:06,880
alice can i have a word please

541
00:37:06,880 --> 00:37:12,710
yes

542
00:37:12,710 --> 00:37:15,280
you like fruit mr smith i use it

543
00:37:15,280 --> 00:37:16,550
occasionally

544
00:37:16,550 --> 00:37:19,350
it's god's goodness he puts it on the

545
00:37:19,350 --> 00:37:19,920
bow

546
00:37:19,920 --> 00:37:21,830
and he can make it with her he's a

547
00:37:21,830 --> 00:37:43,280
remarkable aggravated

548
00:37:43,280 --> 00:37:51,920
tell me what you think of that

549
00:37:51,920 --> 00:37:56,070
cox's orange pippin fine english apple

550
00:37:56,070 --> 00:38:03,440
the best

551
00:38:03,440 --> 00:38:12,150
now try that one

552
00:38:12,150 --> 00:38:14,800
she's got grubs in it you see one of the

553
00:38:14,800 --> 00:38:16,230
skills of being a fruit grower is to

554
00:38:16,230 --> 00:38:18,230
spot a rotten apple before it

555
00:38:18,230 --> 00:38:22,960
affects the rest of the crop

556
00:38:22,960 --> 00:38:25,190
oh alice please i am not listening to

557
00:38:25,190 --> 00:38:26,710
you or would you rather listen to your

558
00:38:26,710 --> 00:38:27,590
father

559
00:38:27,590 --> 00:38:29,830
you don't know anything about this man

560
00:38:29,830 --> 00:38:30,710
his background

561
00:38:30,710 --> 00:38:32,400
where he got his money from his aunt

562
00:38:32,400 --> 00:38:34,150
left it to him i thought you said his

563
00:38:34,150 --> 00:38:35,830
father was a commercial traveler don't

564
00:38:35,830 --> 00:38:37,190
you dare tell him i told you

565
00:38:37,190 --> 00:38:39,030
and he's from the east end of london and

566
00:38:39,030 --> 00:38:40,630
in this family is a wealthy aunt who

567
00:38:40,630 --> 00:38:42,070
leaves him two and a half thousand

568
00:38:42,070 --> 00:38:43,830
pounds it's none of your business well

569
00:38:43,830 --> 00:38:45,280
if you're going to marry this man it is

570
00:38:45,280 --> 00:38:47,280
our business very much

571
00:38:47,280 --> 00:38:49,280
you're so vulnerable and defenseless i

572
00:38:49,280 --> 00:38:51,440
am not vulnerable and defenseless

573
00:38:51,440 --> 00:38:53,190
just because i'm living away from home

574
00:38:53,190 --> 00:38:54,630
which makes you even more our

575
00:38:54,630 --> 00:38:56,550
responsibility

576
00:38:56,550 --> 00:38:59,590
this man is a a charlatan a

577
00:38:59,590 --> 00:39:01,670
your father and i can see through him

578
00:39:01,670 --> 00:39:03,510
seaside towns are full of men like that

579
00:39:03,510 --> 00:39:05,920
preying on young girls like you

580
00:39:05,920 --> 00:39:09,190
girls like me what is a girl like me

581
00:39:09,190 --> 00:39:10,880
you just think all women are too stupid

582
00:39:10,880 --> 00:39:12,320
to think for themselves

583
00:39:12,320 --> 00:39:15,440
alice i want this man out of the house

584
00:39:15,440 --> 00:39:17,590
oh i see you've both conspired against

585
00:39:17,590 --> 00:39:18,880
me have you no

586
00:39:18,880 --> 00:39:22,000
we've done no such thing you just don't

587
00:39:22,000 --> 00:39:24,000
like me having my liberty

588
00:39:24,000 --> 00:39:26,070
what do you know all you know about is

589
00:39:26,070 --> 00:39:28,960
growing apples get out

590
00:39:28,960 --> 00:39:31,510
i'm leaving and i'm taking my future

591
00:39:31,510 --> 00:39:48,340
husband with me

592
00:39:54,320 --> 00:39:56,000
it made their minds up not to like me

593
00:39:56,000 --> 00:39:57,760
you do know that

594
00:39:57,760 --> 00:40:00,070
they said you were a charlatan and is

595
00:40:00,070 --> 00:40:02,150
that what you think i am

596
00:40:02,150 --> 00:40:14,710
you think i'm a fraud

597
00:40:14,710 --> 00:40:16,400
alice i have one thousand three hundred

598
00:40:16,400 --> 00:40:18,480
pounds with lloyd's bank i have

599
00:40:18,480 --> 00:40:20,400
enough money to keep you in comfort for

600
00:40:20,400 --> 00:40:21,510
the rest of your life

601
00:40:21,510 --> 00:40:50,480
dude it's not important

602
00:40:50,480 --> 00:40:54,310
my mother was a bus horse driver

603
00:40:54,310 --> 00:40:57,590
my father a cab driver

604
00:40:57,590 --> 00:41:00,800
my sister a rough rider over the arctic

605
00:41:00,800 --> 00:41:03,110
regions

606
00:41:03,110 --> 00:41:06,070
my brothers were all gallant sailors on

607
00:41:06,070 --> 00:41:09,190
a steamroller

608
00:41:09,190 --> 00:41:11,760
this is the only information i can give

609
00:41:11,760 --> 00:41:13,830
to those who are not entitled

610
00:41:13,830 --> 00:41:16,880
to ask such questions

611
00:41:16,880 --> 00:41:20,070
your despised son-in-law

612
00:41:20,070 --> 00:41:24,000

618
00:41:51,440 --> 00:41:52,550

625
00:42:12,480 --> 00:42:14,710
world

627
00:42:18,550 --> 00:42:22,310

646
00:43:32,400 --> 00:43:34,310
as i said in my letter that would be ten

647
00:43:34,310 --> 00:43:35,830

00:44:11,440 --> 00:44:13,190
oh it's only for a week

659
00:44:13,190 --> 00:44:15,830
we can find a proper house of our own

660
00:44:15,830 --> 00:44:16,480
well then

661
00:44:16,480 --> 00:44:18,400

663
00:44:20,310 --> 00:44:21,440
and i would love to go to a picture

664
00:44:21,440 --> 00:44:23,350
panel uh i thought you had a headache

665
00:44:23,350 --> 00:44:24,800
it's still there but it was only the

666
00:44:24,800 --> 00:44:26,480
journey

667
00:44:26,480 --> 00:44:30,550

necessary doctor

672
00:44:40,550 --> 00:44:42,710
your husband thinks it's necessary now

673
00:44:42,710 --> 00:44:46,000
open your mouth

674
00:44:46,000 --> 00:44:49,670
tongue i feel fine

675
00:44:49,670 --> 00:44:55,760
i am a nurse

676
00:44:55,760 --> 00:44:58,150
pulse is a little fast i think you're

677
00:44:58,150 --> 00:45:00,000
probably right

678
00:45:00,000 --> 00:45:02,630

691
00:45:28,880 --> 00:45:30,400
weather

692
00:45:30,400 --> 00:45:32,400
mrs hodgkin snapped the road caught a

693
00:45:32,400 --> 00:45:34,800
chill and she was dead in three days

694
00:45:34,800 --> 00:46:09,670
drink your tea

695
00:46:09,670 --> 00:46:14,150

703
00:46:33,280 --> 00:46:36,070
will you be long no only half an hour

704
00:46:36,070 --> 00:46:38,150
and don't lock the bathroom door

705
00:46:38,150 --> 00:46:40,710
don't want anything to happen to you die

706
00:46:40,710 --> 00:46:42,230
what do you think i'm going to do

707
00:46:42,230 --> 00:47:11,780
dive into it

708
00:47:22,830 --> 00:47:29,320
um

709
00:47:36,830 --> 00:47:38,780
hmm

710
00:48:11,110 --> 00:48:12,960
it's nice to have a proper gentleman and

711
00:48:12,960 --> 00:48:14,550
lady staying

712
00:48:14,550 --> 00:48:17,590
he's not a gentleman you'll hold your

713
00:48:17,590 --> 00:48:19,350
tongue

714
00:48:19,350 --> 00:48:22,550
he's not posh gentlemen should be posh

715
00:48:22,550 --> 00:48:24,230
what would you know about gentleman your

716
00:48:24,230 --> 00:48:26,070
father was far from being one i can tell

717
00:48:26,070 --> 00:48:27,280
you that but nothing

718
00:48:27,280 --> 00:48:36,320
and get your elbows off the table

719
00:49:00,830 --> 00:49:06,010
um

720
00:49:14,830 --> 00:49:17,030
besides

721
00:49:17,030 --> 00:49:20,230
well they've executed crippen he got

722
00:49:20,230 --> 00:49:22,480
what he deserved

723
00:49:22,480 --> 00:49:24,230
what sort of man could cut off his

724
00:49:24,230 --> 00:49:26,960
wife's head and bury her in the cellar

725
00:49:26,960 --> 00:49:35,440
he took out a visceral

726
00:49:35,440 --> 00:49:37,350
where did you get that word it was in

727
00:49:37,350 --> 00:49:39,110
the paper

728
00:49:39,110 --> 00:49:43,510
he cut it out with a knife

729
00:49:43,510 --> 00:49:47,440
and i'm a doctor too

730
00:49:47,440 --> 00:49:58,880
mum mum look

731
00:49:58,880 --> 00:50:01,110
should i tell her to turn it off you'll

732
00:50:01,110 --> 00:50:09,030
do no such thing

733
00:50:09,030 --> 00:50:12,070
oh it's getting worse sit where you are

734
00:50:12,070 --> 00:50:14,960
but mom look i'll not have them thinking

735
00:50:14,960 --> 00:50:16,480
that we're the types that complain at

736
00:50:16,480 --> 00:50:29,670
every simple thing

737
00:50:29,670 --> 00:50:47,760
i'll say something in the morning

738
00:50:47,760 --> 00:50:50,150
mr smith i bought some eggs while i was

739
00:50:50,150 --> 00:50:51,280
out mrs crossley

740
00:50:51,280 --> 00:50:52,400
thought it might come in useful for

741
00:50:52,400 --> 00:50:54,710
breakfast that's very thoughtful of you

742
00:50:54,710 --> 00:50:56,480
while i was in town i heard about new

743
00:50:56,480 --> 00:50:58,310
motor fire engine they say it's to be

744
00:50:58,310 --> 00:50:59,350
drying out on monday

745
00:50:59,350 --> 00:51:00,880
it's not fire we're worried about it's

746
00:51:00,880 --> 00:51:03,590
water nobody's asking you

747
00:51:03,590 --> 00:51:07,030
well it's um progress i suppose is mrs

748
00:51:07,030 --> 00:51:08,480
smith enjoying her bath

749
00:51:08,480 --> 00:51:14,000
thanks bexo i better check

750
00:51:14,000 --> 00:51:19,190
i hope he doesn't have a bath

751
00:51:19,190 --> 00:51:21,830
alice don't forget to turn the lamp out

752
00:51:21,830 --> 00:51:24,150
when you're finished

753
00:51:24,150 --> 00:51:28,400
alice

754
00:51:28,400 --> 00:51:31,590
this is my friend it's my wife

755
00:51:31,590 --> 00:51:34,830

756
00:51:34,830 --> 00:51:53,830
quickly well go on man

757
00:51:53,830 --> 00:51:57,190
what happened i walked in i found it

758
00:51:57,190 --> 00:52:21,090
like this she did

759
00:52:30,830 --> 00:52:46,710
okay

760
00:52:46,710 --> 00:52:49,830
mrs crossley is this the bath from

761
00:52:49,830 --> 00:52:50,800
number 16

762
00:52:50,800 --> 00:52:54,480
regent road blackpool yes and it was a

763
00:52:54,480 --> 00:52:55,830
fitted bath

764
00:52:55,830 --> 00:52:58,310
i assure you it will be returned and

765
00:52:58,310 --> 00:52:59,190
refitted

766
00:52:59,190 --> 00:53:01,510
first one in the street and this the

767
00:53:01,510 --> 00:53:03,190
height of the holidays too

768
00:53:03,190 --> 00:53:06,400
quite mrs crossley i put it to you that

769
00:53:06,400 --> 00:53:08,230
you are coloring your evidence

770
00:53:08,230 --> 00:53:11,190
i am not did you tell the coroner at the

771
00:53:11,190 --> 00:53:12,960
inquest about the water coming from the

772
00:53:12,960 --> 00:53:13,590
ceiling

773
00:53:13,590 --> 00:53:16,480
i was not asked the question if you had

774
00:53:16,480 --> 00:53:17,590
a suspicion

775
00:53:17,590 --> 00:53:19,110
that the husband was concerned in the

776
00:53:19,110 --> 00:53:21,590
wife's death was it not your duty to

777
00:53:21,590 --> 00:53:23,030
tell the coroner

778
00:53:23,030 --> 00:53:26,550
it was none of my business and now today

779
00:53:26,550 --> 00:53:29,280
you say that after the wife's death when

780
00:53:29,280 --> 00:53:31,190
you suggested to the defendant that he

781
00:53:31,190 --> 00:53:33,110
should not sleep under your roof

782
00:53:33,110 --> 00:53:35,760
that he replied and i quote when they're

783
00:53:35,760 --> 00:53:36,310
dead

784
00:53:36,310 --> 00:53:38,310
they're dead still maintain you're not

785
00:53:38,310 --> 00:53:39,920
colouring the evidence i told him he was

786
00:53:39,920 --> 00:53:40,880
very callous

787
00:53:40,880 --> 00:53:43,920
this woman is a lunatic well she is

788
00:53:43,920 --> 00:53:45,440
she's completely mad

789
00:53:45,440 --> 00:53:51,350
order please

790
00:53:51,350 --> 00:53:57,280
to continue i didn't see any of her

791
00:53:57,280 --> 00:53:59,350
people at the inquest

792
00:53:59,350 --> 00:54:02,550
your wife's people they're too poor to

793
00:54:02,550 --> 00:54:04,710
make the journey

794
00:54:04,710 --> 00:54:07,110
the country people well they must come

795
00:54:07,110 --> 00:54:09,760
to the funeral tomorrow surely

796
00:54:09,760 --> 00:54:14,960
i don't know i wrote to them

797
00:54:14,960 --> 00:54:16,960
i've arranged for mrs hayne next door to

798
00:54:16,960 --> 00:54:19,190
give you a bed tonight

799
00:54:19,190 --> 00:54:21,670
that won't be necessary mrs crossley

800
00:54:21,670 --> 00:54:22,710
really

801
00:54:22,710 --> 00:54:24,630
well you can't sleep here another night

802
00:54:24,630 --> 00:54:27,920
not after the shock you've had

803
00:54:27,920 --> 00:54:31,280
and you only married five weeks

804
00:54:31,280 --> 00:54:32,710
i'd like you and your daughter to come

805
00:54:32,710 --> 00:54:34,310
to the funeral

806
00:54:34,310 --> 00:54:37,510
you've been very good to us she was a

807
00:54:37,510 --> 00:54:38,000
lovely

808
00:54:38,000 --> 00:54:43,030
lady

809
00:54:43,030 --> 00:54:56,030
yes she was

810
00:55:01,830 --> 00:55:04,960
mr burnham sir where is our daughter's

811
00:55:04,960 --> 00:55:06,880
body well

812
00:55:06,880 --> 00:55:10,000
the mortary

813
00:55:10,000 --> 00:55:12,550
i'm afraid so the inquest was this

814
00:55:12,550 --> 00:55:13,920
morning

815
00:55:13,920 --> 00:55:16,550
i know it was but we only got your

816
00:55:16,550 --> 00:55:18,150
telegram last night

817
00:55:18,150 --> 00:55:22,480
when's the funeral tomorrow

818
00:55:22,480 --> 00:55:32,400
mrs crossley would you mind leaving us

819
00:55:32,400 --> 00:55:36,070
we should have been at the inquest

820
00:55:36,070 --> 00:55:38,880
i'm so sorry the verdict was one of

821
00:55:38,880 --> 00:55:40,550
accidental death

822
00:55:40,550 --> 00:55:42,880
she was probably seized with a fit or a

823
00:55:42,880 --> 00:55:44,400
faint

824
00:55:44,400 --> 00:55:47,280
she did have heart diseases no no she

825
00:55:47,280 --> 00:55:48,000
was as healthy

826
00:55:48,000 --> 00:55:51,280
as i am no dr billing did a post-mortem

827
00:55:51,280 --> 00:55:54,000
he said her heart was um well it was

828
00:55:54,000 --> 00:55:55,510
slightly enlarged

829
00:55:55,510 --> 00:56:00,400
what's this

830
00:56:00,400 --> 00:56:04,000
an insurance policy

831
00:56:04,000 --> 00:56:06,630
that's her signature you had our

832
00:56:06,630 --> 00:56:07,960
daughter insured for

833
00:56:07,960 --> 00:56:10,790
500 pounds that's what any responsible

834
00:56:10,790 --> 00:56:13,350
husband would do

835
00:56:13,350 --> 00:56:19,630
now if you don't mind i'd rather be left

836
00:56:28,830 --> 00:56:43,030
alone

837
00:56:43,030 --> 00:56:46,500
what the goodness said don't tell them

838
00:56:56,830 --> 00:57:02,230
that

839
00:57:02,230 --> 00:57:05,530
he's going off with all your alice's

840
00:57:10,830 --> 00:57:13,570
possessions

841
00:57:24,880 --> 00:57:26,230
it's got a tear in it but these are

842
00:57:26,230 --> 00:57:28,400
really nice clothes

843
00:57:28,400 --> 00:57:30,790
i belong to a poor country girl she had

844
00:57:30,790 --> 00:57:32,230
some nice spanish jewelry too have a

845
00:57:32,230 --> 00:57:33,030
look

846
00:57:33,030 --> 00:57:35,920
what happened to her oh she got gored by

847
00:57:35,920 --> 00:57:38,400
a ball

848
00:57:38,400 --> 00:57:51,350
well

849
00:57:51,350 --> 00:57:52,880
you will stay home for christmas won't

850
00:57:52,880 --> 00:57:54,480
you

851
00:57:54,480 --> 00:58:06,830
i made you a promise didn't i

852
00:58:06,830 --> 00:58:20,830
morning

853
00:58:20,830 --> 00:58:24,530
so

854
00:58:59,920 --> 00:59:03,670
merry christmas it's very wicked to

855
00:59:03,670 --> 00:59:04,000
drink

856
00:59:04,000 --> 00:59:15,510
alcohol in the bath

857
00:59:15,510 --> 00:59:17,110
you never told me what your book was

858
00:59:17,110 --> 00:59:19,190
called

859
00:59:19,190 --> 00:59:20,880
it's called the man who saw his own

860
00:59:20,880 --> 00:59:22,790
funeral

861
00:59:22,790 --> 00:59:25,440
what's it about it's about a man who

862
00:59:25,440 --> 00:59:27,350
dies

863
00:59:27,350 --> 00:59:30,070
goes to the top of a hill and sees his

864
00:59:30,070 --> 00:59:34,150
own funeral cortez go past

865
00:59:34,150 --> 00:59:38,550
how unpleasant

866
00:59:38,550 --> 00:59:43,920
everyone has to die edith

867
00:59:43,920 --> 00:59:48,880
the man in your book did he live happily

868
00:59:48,880 --> 00:59:51,830
he achieved what he wanted but was he

869
00:59:51,830 --> 00:59:53,030
happy

870
00:59:53,030 --> 00:59:55,440
well that's what i said he achieved what

871
00:59:55,440 --> 00:59:57,350
he wanted

872
00:59:57,350 --> 01:00:00,710
find women find things

873
01:00:00,710 --> 01:00:08,550
even a veneer of respectability

874
01:00:08,550 --> 01:00:15,030
was he good man no

875
01:00:15,030 --> 01:00:17,760
he began with nothing and he made

876
01:00:17,760 --> 01:00:40,830
something of himself

877
01:00:40,830 --> 01:00:53,650
so

878
01:00:55,110 --> 01:01:06,090
morning

879
01:01:23,110 --> 01:01:28,000
gentlemen of the jury do consider this

880
01:01:28,000 --> 01:01:30,070
this is the second lady who was a

881
01:01:30,070 --> 01:01:32,310
stranger in a house

882
01:01:32,310 --> 01:01:36,830
and who has a bath with the door

883
01:01:36,830 --> 01:01:39,110
unlocked

884
01:01:39,110 --> 01:02:00,310
all rise thank you

885
01:02:00,310 --> 01:02:04,150
i'm sorry i tried still

886
01:02:04,150 --> 01:02:07,030
mustn't give up the jury won't be told

887
01:02:07,030 --> 01:02:09,670
exactly how many wives you had

888
01:02:09,670 --> 01:02:12,880
it's very strange mr horn

889
01:02:12,880 --> 01:02:14,550
thousands of people are dying every day

890
01:02:14,550 --> 01:02:16,400
in europe

891
01:02:16,400 --> 01:02:19,110
and here you are trying to save my

892
01:02:19,110 --> 01:02:21,350
worthless life

893
01:02:21,350 --> 01:02:24,480
it's my job tell me your wife's

894
01:02:24,480 --> 01:02:26,310
gentleman sir

895
01:02:26,310 --> 01:02:29,920
yes must be difficult for you

896
01:02:29,920 --> 01:02:33,030
it is overcoming the prejudice of other

897
01:02:33,030 --> 01:02:35,190
people is always a problem

898
01:02:35,190 --> 01:02:39,510
still the battle on

899
01:02:39,510 --> 01:02:44,880
mr hall

900
01:02:44,880 --> 01:02:49,510
they're saying about me in the papers

901
01:02:49,510 --> 01:02:53,280
do you think i'm that bad no man is too

902
01:02:53,280 --> 01:02:58,480
bad to save

903
01:02:58,480 --> 01:03:13,110
to try to save

904
01:03:13,110 --> 01:03:16,230
is this seat taken

905
01:03:16,230 --> 01:03:24,480
i don't think so

906
01:03:24,480 --> 01:03:26,150
it's fascinating to watch the great

907
01:03:26,150 --> 01:03:33,510
edward marshall hall in action

908
01:03:33,510 --> 01:03:44,710
have you been in to watch now

909
01:03:44,710 --> 01:03:49,350
i've heard he sits on a cushion

910
01:03:49,350 --> 01:03:53,510
i was told by someone up in the gallery

911
01:03:53,510 --> 01:03:57,280
apparently he suffers from piles

912
01:03:57,280 --> 01:04:01,670
um

913
01:04:01,670 --> 01:04:02,790
i suppose you're waiting to give

914
01:04:02,790 --> 01:04:05,510
evidence

915
01:04:05,510 --> 01:04:08,710
yes they may not call you sometimes they

916
01:04:08,710 --> 01:04:10,310
don't

917
01:04:10,310 --> 01:04:12,630
where have you come from where is it

918
01:04:12,630 --> 01:04:13,920
canada

919
01:04:13,920 --> 01:04:16,230
i was born over here but i left england

920
01:04:16,230 --> 01:04:21,440
13 years ago

921
01:04:21,440 --> 01:04:25,440
i knew one of his wives

922
01:04:25,440 --> 01:04:26,790
you do know there were other wives don't

923
01:04:26,790 --> 01:04:28,710
you once he didn't kill i don't want to

924
01:04:28,710 --> 01:04:29,590
discuss it

925
01:04:29,590 --> 01:04:31,030
just made off with all their possessions

926
01:04:31,030 --> 01:04:38,310
they were the lucky ones if you ask me

927
01:04:38,310 --> 01:04:42,960
how many were there all together

928
01:04:42,960 --> 01:04:49,190
eight one legally in the rest vigorously

929
01:04:49,190 --> 01:04:55,670
why did you stay with him

930
01:04:55,670 --> 01:04:59,670
because he needed me

931
01:04:59,670 --> 01:05:05,510
you still love him don't you

932
01:05:05,510 --> 01:05:27,150
he always came back isn't that enough

933
01:05:56,000 --> 01:05:57,920
have you got it yes i will give it here

934
01:05:57,920 --> 01:05:59,350
then

935
01:05:59,350 --> 01:06:01,590
oh no no this is the wrong one this is

936
01:06:01,590 --> 01:06:03,110
not the one that i asked before oh i'm

937
01:06:03,110 --> 01:06:06,710
so sorry mrs faraday i shall go upstairs

938
01:06:06,710 --> 01:06:08,880
and fetch me another cup of tea yes mrs

939
01:06:08,880 --> 01:06:10,710
faraday

940
01:06:10,710 --> 01:06:19,350
impossible girl

941
01:06:19,350 --> 01:06:32,230
that motifs

942
01:06:32,230 --> 01:06:36,790
hello hello

943
01:06:36,790 --> 01:06:41,350
would you like to dance the tango

944
01:06:41,350 --> 01:06:42,960
i'm afraid i can't do it but i can

945
01:06:42,960 --> 01:06:45,030
always teach you

946
01:06:45,030 --> 01:06:48,070
i'm with someone yes i saw

947
01:06:48,070 --> 01:06:51,780
she's my employer i'm her companion

948
01:06:55,110 --> 01:07:00,860
and my name's john lloyd

949
01:07:03,590 --> 01:07:16,760
margaret margaret lofty

950
01:07:54,830 --> 01:08:00,070
yourself

951
01:08:00,070 --> 01:08:01,830
you're not fighting for your country no

952
01:08:01,830 --> 01:08:03,280
my country needs me here

953
01:08:03,280 --> 01:08:07,190
i'm a land agent ah cross

954
01:08:07,190 --> 01:08:14,480
for the warriors

955
01:08:14,480 --> 01:08:16,310
how long have you been um mrs faraday's

956
01:08:16,310 --> 01:08:18,960
companion

957
01:08:18,960 --> 01:08:22,640
six months and why'd you stay

958
01:08:22,640 --> 01:08:23,890
she took me in after i was

959
01:08:26,470 --> 01:08:29,750
off the world

960
01:08:29,750 --> 01:08:32,710
i'm sorry i really have to go well am i

961
01:08:32,710 --> 01:08:34,710
gonna see you later

962
01:08:34,710 --> 01:08:38,420
yes i'd like to

963
01:08:46,070 --> 01:08:50,000
i'm sorry mrs faraday

964
01:08:50,000 --> 01:08:52,000
i told you not to talk to any soldiers i

965
01:08:52,000 --> 01:08:53,920
wasn't talking to a soldier

966
01:08:53,920 --> 01:08:55,750
i was talking to that gentleman over

967
01:08:55,750 --> 01:08:57,920
there but he should be in uniform what's

968
01:08:57,920 --> 01:08:58,640
wrong with him

969
01:08:58,640 --> 01:09:03,270
he's a land agent that is no excuse

970
01:09:03,270 --> 01:09:14,470
this tea is cold

971
01:09:14,470 --> 01:09:16,710
well you must have a day off i have an

972
01:09:16,710 --> 01:09:23,920
afternoon which is my own tomorrow

973
01:09:26,710 --> 01:09:30,790
could that be all right

974
01:09:30,790 --> 01:09:32,070
sure we said one o'clock by the

975
01:09:32,070 --> 01:09:48,000
bandstand o'clock

976
01:09:48,000 --> 01:09:49,600
do you think you're doing here looking

977
01:09:49,600 --> 01:09:50,790
for you why are you wearing those

978
01:09:50,790 --> 01:09:52,000
clothes never mind now i said what do

979
01:09:52,000 --> 01:09:53,190
you think you're doing it

980
01:09:53,190 --> 01:09:55,670
looking for you i went to lloyd's where

981
01:09:55,670 --> 01:09:56,880
you said i could write to you but they

982
01:09:56,880 --> 01:09:58,070
didn't have your address and i don't

983
01:09:58,070 --> 01:09:59,030
know i don't want you coming here

984
01:09:59,030 --> 01:10:00,070
following me around

985
01:10:00,070 --> 01:10:01,840
there's nothing to sell in the shop i'm

986
01:10:01,840 --> 01:10:03,270
meeting a fellow in half an hour

987
01:10:03,270 --> 01:10:05,110
we're going off to london now why don't

988
01:10:05,110 --> 01:10:07,190
you go up

989
01:10:07,190 --> 01:10:10,150
why don't i stay here and meet him if

990
01:10:10,150 --> 01:10:10,880
we're talking

991
01:10:10,880 --> 01:10:13,030
about business you're gonna feel out of

992
01:10:13,030 --> 01:10:15,430
it just go home i will write here

993
01:10:15,430 --> 01:10:16,800
is this the fellow you went to canada

994
01:10:16,800 --> 01:10:18,390
with or the one that you went to spain

995
01:10:18,390 --> 01:10:18,710
with

996
01:10:18,710 --> 01:10:20,310
oh i've had enough of this don't you

997
01:10:20,310 --> 01:10:22,070
think i've had enough

998
01:10:22,070 --> 01:10:24,150
sitting home for weeks on end nothing to

999
01:10:24,150 --> 01:10:25,430
sell in the shop not knowing when you'll

1000
01:10:25,430 --> 01:10:26,560
be back

1001
01:10:26,560 --> 01:10:28,470
you leave me 16 shillings a week which

1002
01:10:28,470 --> 01:10:30,230
is barely enough to live on

1003
01:10:30,230 --> 01:10:32,070
i am your wife george or have you

1004
01:10:32,070 --> 01:10:33,670
forgotten that then go out and find

1005
01:10:33,670 --> 01:10:35,030
yourself a situation

1006
01:10:35,030 --> 01:10:38,310
and stop bothering me situation

1007
01:10:38,310 --> 01:10:40,880
yes a job in another shop an office

1008
01:10:40,880 --> 01:10:42,470
anything just leave me alone

1009
01:10:42,470 --> 01:10:43,920
stop interfering in my business do you

1010
01:10:43,920 --> 01:10:46,880
understand me

1011
01:10:46,880 --> 01:10:50,070
and i'll go but don't you expect me to

1012
01:10:50,070 --> 01:10:58,320
be there when you get back

1013
01:11:10,840 --> 01:11:17,530
so

1014
01:11:25,350 --> 01:11:28,560
oh john it's beautiful

1015
01:11:28,560 --> 01:11:32,230
oh thank you so much does it suit me

1016
01:11:32,230 --> 01:11:36,000
you look wonderful marriage

1017
01:11:36,000 --> 01:11:39,110
impossible it is out of the question

1018
01:11:39,110 --> 01:11:43,430
no it isn't and what about me

1019
01:11:43,430 --> 01:11:51,270
i'm sorry

1020
01:11:51,270 --> 01:11:53,430
you're a very stupid girl i'm not a girl

1021
01:11:53,430 --> 01:11:54,710
i'm a woman

1022
01:11:54,710 --> 01:11:56,310
and i won't be spoken to that way

1023
01:11:56,310 --> 01:11:58,960
anymore you are a stupid girl

1024
01:11:58,960 --> 01:12:00,470
because you were engaged once before and

1025
01:12:00,470 --> 01:12:02,070
look what happened you have scarcely

1026
01:12:02,070 --> 01:12:02,470
known

1027
01:12:02,470 --> 01:12:06,880
this man for two weeks i'm sure of him

1028
01:12:06,880 --> 01:12:09,600
you were sure of the last one you became

1029
01:12:09,600 --> 01:12:12,230
engaged and he turned out to be married

1030
01:12:12,230 --> 01:12:13,350
well i only hope you know what you're

1031
01:12:13,350 --> 01:12:16,310
doing that is all i have to say

1032
01:12:16,310 --> 01:12:19,030
oh i know what i'm doing all right he's

1033
01:12:19,030 --> 01:12:21,350
taking me to london

1034
01:12:21,350 --> 01:12:25,030
for my honeymoon

1035
01:12:25,030 --> 01:12:27,840
it's such a pleasure to have newlyweds

1036
01:12:27,840 --> 01:12:28,800
thank you

1037
01:12:28,800 --> 01:12:32,070
and where was the wedding just yesterday

1038
01:12:32,070 --> 01:12:34,560
just yesterday i'm afraid my wife hasn't

1039
01:12:34,560 --> 01:12:36,150
been feeling too well

1040
01:12:36,150 --> 01:12:38,150
she caught a chill on the journey i had

1041
01:12:38,150 --> 01:12:39,350
to take her to see a doctor

1042
01:12:39,350 --> 01:12:42,470
oh nothing serious i hope no nothing at

1043
01:12:42,470 --> 01:12:43,350
all

1044
01:12:43,350 --> 01:12:45,430
i'm absolutely fine really i think we'll

1045
01:12:45,430 --> 01:12:46,960
retire to bed if you don't mind mrs

1046
01:12:46,960 --> 01:12:47,760
blatcher

1047
01:12:47,760 --> 01:12:51,600
of course

1048
01:12:51,600 --> 01:12:55,670
i wonder first

1049
01:12:55,670 --> 01:13:02,840
could my wife have a bath

1050
01:13:02,840 --> 01:13:06,150
sorry you should have had a hot part

1051
01:13:06,150 --> 01:13:07,430
like i told you to

1052
01:13:07,430 --> 01:13:09,350
and i told you i don't like baths don't

1053
01:13:09,350 --> 01:13:15,110
believe in them

1054
01:13:15,110 --> 01:13:17,190
it would ease your chill it would give

1055
01:13:17,190 --> 01:13:19,110
me one

1056
01:13:19,110 --> 01:13:22,560
i'm fine honestly i didn't need to be

1057
01:13:22,560 --> 01:13:27,920
taken to the doctor

1058
01:13:27,920 --> 01:13:58,840
please just let me go to sleep

1059
01:13:58,840 --> 01:14:00,000
so

1060
01:14:00,000 --> 01:14:01,760
asked mrs pletch to land some hot water

1061
01:14:01,760 --> 01:14:03,430
this morning

1062
01:14:03,430 --> 01:14:06,000
i told you i don't need a bath i'm not

1063
01:14:06,000 --> 01:14:11,430
having your chill get worse

1064
01:14:11,430 --> 01:14:14,310
look you are my wife if i tell you to

1065
01:14:14,310 --> 01:14:24,880
have a hot bath you will have a hot bath

1066
01:14:24,880 --> 01:14:40,000
if that's what you want

1067
01:14:40,000 --> 01:14:54,840
i only have your interests at heart

1068
01:14:54,840 --> 01:14:58,930
darling

1069
01:15:08,840 --> 01:15:21,380
so

1070
01:15:27,030 --> 01:15:31,350
margaret i told you not to lock the door

1071
01:15:31,350 --> 01:15:42,810
it's dangerous i suppose

1072
01:16:04,840 --> 01:16:06,210
so

1073
01:17:00,070 --> 01:17:05,670
how did you get in

1074
01:17:05,670 --> 01:17:13,350
why don't you just relax

1075
01:17:13,350 --> 01:17:17,110
good girl

1076
01:17:17,110 --> 01:17:30,070
let me do your feet for you

1077
01:17:42,840 --> 01:17:56,840
dude

1078
01:17:56,840 --> 01:17:59,760
so

1079
01:18:10,840 --> 01:18:24,840
oh

1080
01:18:24,840 --> 01:18:37,060
uh

1081
01:19:55,350 --> 01:20:11,190
are you dead

1082
01:20:11,190 --> 01:20:51,760
he did

1083
01:20:51,760 --> 01:20:55,520
sorry

1084
01:20:55,520 --> 01:20:59,030
i don't know who you are anymore george

1085
01:20:59,030 --> 01:21:02,390
i don't know what your business is

1086
01:21:02,390 --> 01:21:09,110
i don't know what you want adif

1087
01:21:09,110 --> 01:21:47,840
i'm nothing without you

1088
01:21:47,840 --> 01:21:57,190
mom mom

1089
01:21:57,190 --> 01:22:03,270
what do you think george very nice

1090
01:22:03,270 --> 01:22:06,560
i won't go away tomorrow it's only for a

1091
01:22:06,560 --> 01:22:07,600
day

1092
01:22:07,600 --> 01:22:10,310
gotta see solicit what about i'll

1093
01:22:10,310 --> 01:22:21,270
collect some money to sign to me

1094
01:22:21,270 --> 01:22:25,030
are you john lloyd no no never heard of

1095
01:22:25,030 --> 01:22:25,760
him

1096
01:22:25,760 --> 01:22:27,430
detective inspector neil of scotland

1097
01:22:27,430 --> 01:22:29,840
yard i believe you were married to a

1098
01:22:29,840 --> 01:22:31,840
margaret elizabeth lofty on the 17th of

1099
01:22:31,840 --> 01:22:33,270
january

1100
01:22:33,270 --> 01:22:36,070
no no no no you made a mistake this is

1101
01:22:36,070 --> 01:22:37,030
my wife

1102
01:22:37,030 --> 01:22:39,600
she had an accident in her bath very

1103
01:22:39,600 --> 01:22:40,960
tragic

1104
01:22:40,960 --> 01:22:42,630
very similar to another death we've been

1105
01:22:42,630 --> 01:22:45,110
informed about

1106
01:22:45,110 --> 01:22:47,520
what's this all about george i also

1107
01:22:47,520 --> 01:22:48,960
believe you're identical with george

1108
01:22:48,960 --> 01:22:49,920
smith

1109
01:22:49,920 --> 01:22:51,840
whose wife was found dead in a bath in

1110
01:22:51,840 --> 01:22:54,000
blackpool a year ago

1111
01:22:54,000 --> 01:22:56,310
well i am george smith but i know what

1112
01:22:56,310 --> 01:22:57,840
you're talking about

1113
01:22:57,840 --> 01:23:01,030
i think you do mr smith would you mind

1114
01:23:01,030 --> 01:23:07,600
coming with us sorry edith

1115
01:23:07,600 --> 01:23:09,030
it might be a little bit longer than i

1116
01:23:09,030 --> 01:23:10,470
intended

1117
01:23:18,230 --> 01:23:20,390
you expect to make the charges stick sir

1118
01:23:20,390 --> 01:23:21,670
i don't know

1119
01:23:21,670 --> 01:23:24,310
three coroner's juries had all the facts

1120
01:23:24,310 --> 01:23:25,840
there wasn't a shred of evidence that he

1121
01:23:25,840 --> 01:23:27,190
was in the bathroom with any of his

1122
01:23:27,190 --> 01:23:28,390
wives

1123
01:23:28,390 --> 01:23:30,150
well he made a tidy summer money out of

1124
01:23:30,150 --> 01:23:34,470
all of them

1125
01:23:34,470 --> 01:23:36,070
two and a half thousand out of the first

1126
01:23:36,070 --> 01:23:38,230
one over seven hundred quid out of each

1127
01:23:38,230 --> 01:23:40,470
of the arms that ain't a crime

1128
01:23:40,470 --> 01:23:42,230
and how possible was it for him to drown

1129
01:23:42,230 --> 01:23:44,880
him just like that without a struggle

1130
01:23:44,880 --> 01:23:52,470
and it's our job to find out

1131
01:23:52,470 --> 01:23:56,000
thanks for coming i didn't think i'd

1132
01:23:56,000 --> 01:23:57,600
ever hear from you again

1133
01:23:57,600 --> 01:24:00,230
life's funny like that i didn't laugh

1134
01:24:00,230 --> 01:24:02,000
when we parted

1135
01:24:02,000 --> 01:24:04,800
hey you don't have to do this helen you

1136
01:24:04,800 --> 01:24:06,390
know that

1137
01:24:06,390 --> 01:24:08,070
let's just get on with it shall we

1138
01:24:08,070 --> 01:24:15,350
before people start to talk

1139
01:24:15,350 --> 01:24:19,350
lay down in the bath and

1140
01:24:19,350 --> 01:24:22,630
attempt to relax

1141
01:24:22,630 --> 01:24:25,270
miss stanley is a champion swimmer and

1142
01:24:25,270 --> 01:24:27,760
is accustomed to holding her breath

1143
01:24:27,760 --> 01:24:30,560
also remember that smith's wives were in

1144
01:24:30,560 --> 01:24:42,840
all probability

1145
01:24:42,840 --> 01:24:56,840
surprised

1146
01:24:56,840 --> 01:24:59,030
sure sir

1147
01:24:59,030 --> 01:24:59,690
get back

1148
01:25:10,840 --> 01:25:21,600
downtown

1149
01:25:21,600 --> 01:25:31,170
has that major case offer

1150
01:25:38,840 --> 01:25:40,710
so

1151
01:25:40,710 --> 01:25:44,150
inspector neil this is exhibit number 23

1152
01:25:44,150 --> 01:25:46,470
the bath which was removed from bismarck

1153
01:25:46,470 --> 01:25:48,150
red highgate

1154
01:25:48,150 --> 01:25:51,600
yes it is you were telling us about the

1155
01:25:51,600 --> 01:25:53,270
prisoner's reply when you charged him

1156
01:25:53,270 --> 01:25:54,800
with murder

1157
01:25:54,800 --> 01:25:58,710
he made no reply whatsoever

1158
01:25:58,710 --> 01:26:01,430
he's mine i told you before i was

1159
01:26:01,430 --> 01:26:02,000
innocent

1160
01:26:02,000 --> 01:26:04,070
prisoner you're doing yourself no good

1161
01:26:04,070 --> 01:26:06,470
now sit down he's lying

1162
01:26:06,470 --> 01:26:14,310
i'm innocent

1163
01:26:14,310 --> 01:26:21,030
leave it to me but please sit down

1164
01:26:21,030 --> 01:26:24,680
there's a good chap

1165
01:26:34,840 --> 01:26:48,840
edith

1166
01:26:48,840 --> 01:26:50,520
so

1167
01:26:59,840 --> 01:27:02,390
i swear to tell the truth the whole

1168
01:27:02,390 --> 01:27:03,520
truth

1169
01:27:03,520 --> 01:27:05,520
and nothing about the truth so help me

1170
01:27:05,520 --> 01:27:06,710
god

1171
01:27:06,710 --> 01:27:08,470
well i'll protest the evidence of this

1172
01:27:08,470 --> 01:27:11,110
witness she hasn't given it yet mr hall

1173
01:27:11,110 --> 01:27:13,030
then allow me to protest the evidence a

1174
01:27:13,030 --> 01:27:14,390
witness is about to give

1175
01:27:14,390 --> 01:27:20,630
the jury will hear it mr hall proceed

1176
01:27:20,630 --> 01:27:23,920
you are edith may smith

1177
01:27:23,920 --> 01:27:26,560
i am the wife of the prisoner we were

1178
01:27:26,560 --> 01:27:28,190
married on the 30th of july

1179
01:27:28,190 --> 01:27:30,960
1908. and may the witness be passed

1180
01:27:30,960 --> 01:27:41,760
exhibit number 162

1181
01:27:41,760 --> 01:27:43,600
this is a copy of our certificate of

1182
01:27:43,600 --> 01:27:45,760
marriage

1183
01:27:45,760 --> 01:27:47,920
did you at any time have any knowledge

1184
01:27:47,920 --> 01:27:49,840
that he went subsequently through a

1185
01:27:49,840 --> 01:27:52,880
marriage ceremony to miss bessie mundy

1186
01:27:52,880 --> 01:27:56,470
under the name of williams no i did not

1187
01:27:56,470 --> 01:27:58,840
or under his real name to miss alice

1188
01:27:58,840 --> 01:28:00,070
burnham

1189
01:28:00,070 --> 01:28:04,000
no i did not or to miss margaret lofty

1190
01:28:04,000 --> 01:28:07,350
under the name of john lloyd no i did

1191
01:28:07,350 --> 01:28:08,230
not

1192
01:28:08,230 --> 01:28:10,030
i always loved her

1193
01:28:11,430 --> 01:28:14,560
i did you lived as man

1194
01:28:14,560 --> 01:28:17,350
and wife together and knew nothing of

1195
01:28:17,350 --> 01:28:21,520
these subsequent marriages

1196
01:28:21,520 --> 01:28:37,430
that he's correct

1197
01:28:37,430 --> 01:28:40,310
you were fond of him and he had been

1198
01:28:40,310 --> 01:28:43,110
kind to you

1199
01:28:43,110 --> 01:28:48,310
yes had he ever been cruel to you

1200
01:28:48,310 --> 01:28:52,470
no had he ever shown you violence

1201
01:28:52,470 --> 01:28:56,810
no he'd always treated you kindly

1202
01:28:58,800 --> 01:29:03,390
yes so you loved him

1203
01:29:08,840 --> 01:29:09,960
yes

1204
01:29:34,150 --> 01:29:37,520
members of the jury including your

1205
01:29:37,520 --> 01:29:39,920
consideration this possibility

1206
01:29:39,920 --> 01:29:42,150
the possibility at least in the last two

1207
01:29:42,150 --> 01:29:44,630
cases possibly in the first

1208
01:29:44,630 --> 01:29:47,920
of this having happened wife to husband

1209
01:29:47,920 --> 01:29:51,110
i'm going to have a bath husband to wife

1210
01:29:51,110 --> 01:29:52,880
all right i'm going to turn the water on

1211
01:29:52,880 --> 01:29:55,430
for you husband goes to the bathroom and

1212
01:29:55,430 --> 01:29:57,110
turns on the water

1213
01:29:57,110 --> 01:29:59,600
the wife comes in in her dressing gown

1214
01:29:59,600 --> 01:30:00,560
or

1215
01:30:00,560 --> 01:30:03,350
nightgown the newly married husband

1216
01:30:03,350 --> 01:30:04,800
stays in the room

1217
01:30:04,800 --> 01:30:09,190
strips her or she strips herself

1218
01:30:09,190 --> 01:30:12,880
picks her up an h-10 woman a nine-stone

1219
01:30:12,880 --> 01:30:14,000
woman

1220
01:30:14,000 --> 01:30:17,670
and lowers her into the bath

1221
01:30:17,670 --> 01:30:21,110
but holds the knees up

1222
01:30:21,110 --> 01:30:22,960
hang me at once and be done with it

1223
01:30:22,960 --> 01:30:25,030
there is no evidence of it

1224
01:30:25,030 --> 01:30:48,880
but consider all the possibilities

1225
01:30:48,880 --> 01:30:57,430
will the defendant please rise

1226
01:30:57,430 --> 01:31:00,070
gentlemen of the jury have you agreed

1227
01:31:00,070 --> 01:31:01,760
upon your verdict

1228
01:31:01,760 --> 01:31:05,190
yes and do you find george joseph smith

1229
01:31:05,190 --> 01:31:07,760
guilty or not guilty of the willful

1230
01:31:07,760 --> 01:31:09,030
murder of bessie

1231
01:31:09,030 --> 01:31:14,840
annie constance mundy

1232
01:31:14,840 --> 01:31:17,020
guilty

1233
01:31:21,520 --> 01:31:26,150
george joseph smith

1234
01:31:26,150 --> 01:31:28,710
judges sometimes use this occasion to

1235
01:31:28,710 --> 01:31:30,470
warn the public against the repetition

1236
01:31:30,470 --> 01:31:33,110
of such crimes

1237
01:31:33,110 --> 01:31:35,520
they sometimes use such occasions to

1238
01:31:35,520 --> 01:31:37,270
exhort the prisoner to repentance

1239
01:31:39,030 --> 01:31:40,710
i propose to take neither of those

1240
01:31:40,710 --> 01:31:42,800
courses

1241
01:31:42,800 --> 01:31:44,560
i do not believe there is another man in

1242
01:31:44,560 --> 01:31:46,310
england who needs to be warned against

1243
01:31:46,310 --> 01:31:49,270
the commission of such a crime

1244
01:31:49,270 --> 01:31:50,960
and i think that exhortation to

1245
01:31:50,960 --> 01:32:01,350
repentance would be wasted on you

1246
01:32:01,350 --> 01:32:04,310
the sentence of this court is that

1247
01:32:04,310 --> 01:32:06,070
you'll be hanged by the neck

1248
01:32:06,070 --> 01:32:08,800
until you are dead and that your body be

1249
01:32:08,800 --> 01:32:10,150
afterwards bedded

1250
01:32:10,150 --> 01:32:36,230
within the precincts of the prisons

1251
01:32:36,230 --> 01:32:37,920
why are you doing this you've got my

1252
01:32:37,920 --> 01:32:40,310
story for the paper is that it i don't

1253
01:32:40,310 --> 01:32:42,150
want your story

1254
01:32:42,150 --> 01:32:53,430
time you heard mine

1255
01:32:53,430 --> 01:32:56,470
i'm his wife his first and only legal

1256
01:32:56,470 --> 01:32:57,840
one

1257
01:32:57,840 --> 01:33:00,110
i married george on the 17th of january

1258
01:33:00,110 --> 01:33:01,600
1898

1259
01:33:01,600 --> 01:33:04,070
10 years before you did he called

1260
01:33:04,070 --> 01:33:05,110
himself love then

1261
01:33:05,110 --> 01:33:08,800
oliver george love you mean

1262
01:33:08,800 --> 01:33:10,710
we were the lucky ones there was another

1263
01:33:10,710 --> 01:33:12,230
one between you and me and no idea what

1264
01:33:12,230 --> 01:33:15,110
happened to her

1265
01:33:15,110 --> 01:33:18,800
i don't believe you this is a photograph

1266
01:33:18,800 --> 01:33:20,880
of our wedding

1267
01:33:20,880 --> 01:33:23,030
he left me with nothing nothing but the

1268
01:33:23,030 --> 01:33:27,430
clothes i had on

1269
01:33:27,430 --> 01:33:28,960
i'm sorry to break it to you like this

1270
01:33:28,960 --> 01:33:34,310
but i had a real reason for coming

1271
01:33:34,310 --> 01:33:38,630
he's my sapper my tom

1272
01:33:38,630 --> 01:33:40,070
we're gonna be married as soon as i'm

1273
01:33:40,070 --> 01:33:42,470
free

1274
01:33:42,470 --> 01:33:43,920
i know what you're thinking i could have

1275
01:33:43,920 --> 01:33:45,350
married him in canada and no one would

1276
01:33:45,350 --> 01:33:46,800
have been any the wiser but can you let

1277
01:33:46,800 --> 01:33:48,000
me out now please

1278
01:33:48,000 --> 01:33:49,520
we should look after each other you and

1279
01:33:49,520 --> 01:33:51,110
me

1280
01:33:51,110 --> 01:33:52,630
it seems you already have someone to

1281
01:33:52,630 --> 01:33:56,000
look after you what will you do

1282
01:33:56,000 --> 01:33:59,110
i don't know

1283
01:33:59,110 --> 01:34:02,470
go home i suppose

1284
01:34:02,470 --> 01:34:06,230
you know i would really like it if you

1285
01:34:06,230 --> 01:34:08,310
were to come to our wedding

1286
01:34:08,310 --> 01:34:10,630
you and i have so much in common you

1287
01:34:10,630 --> 01:34:12,880
could have married in canada

1288
01:34:12,880 --> 01:34:15,110
you didn't have to wait for now no one

1289
01:34:15,110 --> 01:34:18,630
would have been any the wiser

1290
01:34:18,630 --> 01:34:22,310
or maybe i was like you

1291
01:34:22,310 --> 01:34:34,470
still in love with him

1292
01:34:34,470 --> 01:34:38,560
dear edith dearest of all

1293
01:34:38,560 --> 01:34:40,390
i am naturally too downcast and

1294
01:34:40,390 --> 01:34:42,230
depressed to cover much ground in this

1295
01:34:42,230 --> 01:34:44,710
time of writing

1296
01:34:44,710 --> 01:34:47,430
i have not asked for a reprieve nor made

1297
01:34:47,430 --> 01:34:49,110
a petition

1298
01:34:49,110 --> 01:34:52,390
and do not intend doing so

1299
01:34:52,390 --> 01:34:55,840
my property i give to you

1300
01:34:55,840 --> 01:34:58,560
you are the only dazzling star left to

1301
01:34:58,560 --> 01:35:00,880
cheer my life

1302
01:35:00,880 --> 01:35:02,560
if ever a man was sorry for his

1303
01:35:02,560 --> 01:35:04,470
treatment towards his lady love

1304
01:35:04,470 --> 01:35:08,390
then it is me may an old age

1305
01:35:08,390 --> 01:35:10,880
serene and bright and lovely as a

1306
01:35:10,880 --> 01:35:12,310
lapland knight

1307
01:35:12,310 --> 01:35:15,350
lead thee to thy grave

1308
01:35:15,350 --> 01:35:19,190
now my true love goodbye

1309
01:35:19,190 --> 01:35:23,190
until we meet again yours

1310
01:35:23,190 --> 01:35:39,350
with immortal love joy

1311
01:35:39,350 --> 01:35:48,060
there is a table

1312
01:35:50,710 --> 01:35:56,390
my life

1313
01:36:22,000 --> 01:36:24,800
i didn't think you'd come i brought you

1314
01:36:24,800 --> 01:36:30,470
something

1315
01:36:30,470 --> 01:36:33,840
i haven't read it

1316
01:36:33,840 --> 01:36:39,600
i can't

1317
01:36:39,600 --> 01:36:42,000
i don't know what to say i know it's an

1318
01:36:42,000 --> 01:36:44,560
odd sort of present

1319
01:36:44,560 --> 01:37:18,840
but now at least you have something

1320
01:37:18,840 --> 01:37:24,310
so

1321
01:37:24,310 --> 01:37:27,520
may an old age serene and bright and

1322
01:37:27,520 --> 01:37:30,310
lovely as a lapland knight lead thee to

1323
01:37:30,310 --> 01:37:39,390
thy brave

1324
01:38:12,710 --> 01:38:14,800
you
